Web 2.0, social software has to be used to be fully appreciated.

The following three posts have a wealth of information, ideas and tips for business managers and CIO's about social media, web 2.0, social networking, and online communities. The fact is, this stuff, social software has to be used to be fully appreciated. It takes time to grasp its power and usefulness. Workplace social software and communities need to be understood from both, a regular user view point and from an administrator (control) view point. You bet, this is work. There are no hurry-up or easy solutions in a workplace or community environment but the benefits are gigantic.

Web 2.0 applications must be experienced hands-on to be appreciated, but most CIOs don't take the opportunity.

People in businesses are using social software and virtual communities to relate ideas, stories and information to each other in, say, a gigantic learning and development environment. It helps them spot new business opportunities before the competition does, create a meeting place, be open to radical opportunities, break down silos, support experimentation, enable managers to represent the customer vis-Ã -vis their own organizations, and help everyone move forward.

Cool, enterprise mashups are getting easier and easier. We use Drupal, so an open api is something we love hearing about.

"Google and Friends to Gang Up on Facebook ", NY Times

"...an alliance of companies led by Google plans to begin introducing a common set of standards [open api's] to allow software developers to write programs for Google's social network, Orkut, as well as others, including LinkedIn, hi5, Friendster, Plaxo and Ning.

The alliance includes business software makers Salesforce.com and Oracle, who are moving to let third-party programmers write applications that can be accessed by their customers."

Facebook widgets, applications, and mashups

"In Facebook, Investing in a Theory", NY Times

"Thousands of software developers are creating features for Facebook, the rapidly growing social network, many hoping to strike it rich alongside Facebook's own employees."

We go even further... Users of our social web applications can use many already developed widgets, applications, and content (vids, images, text) to automagically apply on facebooks. Users/members are authenicated on login. All content is RSS/XML enabled.

On a different note... If MS gets involved with facebook, they would most likely scare off (me) many of the independent developers.

"Comparing Wal-Mart and Target on Facebook", from Emergence Marketing.

"Target has over 7,000 members and mostly positive comments in a vibrant set of discussions. The Wal-Mart group on the other hand has a little over 1,200 members, no discussions are allowed, and the wall postings are mostly negative."

It appears Wal-mart has not learned much from their earlier endeavors on the net. These days customers are king and it is about abundance.

Anyway, we've been working on some Enterprise mashups - Creating Facebook applications (mashups) using a lot of the functionality, user management, authentication, content (images, video, text), groups we use in Drupal web applications.
